Hemp Building Directory (HBD) is Australia’s independent, industry-led platform dedicated to accelerating the uptake of hemp-based building materials and construction systems.

Operating as a social enterprise partnership by Shelter Building Design and Environmentarian, HBD exists to make building with hemp more accessible, credible, and commercially viable across Australia. It connects architects, designers, builders, manufacturers, growers, researchers, educators, and clients through a curated directory, educational resources, and on-the-ground industry engagement.

HBD showcases the full spectrum of hemp construction methods, including cast-in-situ hempcrete, blocks, panels, and emerging prefabricated systems, alongside complementary hemp products such as insulation, hemp wood, lime binders, finishes and composites.

The focus is practical: helping people understand what exists now, who is doing the work, and how to move from interest to implementation.

Beyond listings, HBD plays an active role in education and advocacy. This includes industry articles, case studies, events such as Hemp Connect, university and TAFE engagement, and supporting conversations around standards, performance data, carbon outcomes, and supply-chain maturity. The goal is to help hemp building move from niche to normal.

The Hemp Building Directory works collaboratively with industry bodies, state groups, and innovators, including growers and processors, to strengthen the entire value chain.
