Health. Local. Sustainable. Delicious.
Tassie Hemp Company is a family-run Tasmanian business producing premium hemp food products from Woodlands Farm in Northern Tasmania. With a strong focus on local processing, regenerative farming, and community connection, the business is deeply rooted in place and purpose.
Business Overview
Tassie Hemp Company grows hemp for seed at Woodlands Farm, producing hemp hearts, hemp seed oil, and hemp flour. From cultivation through to processing, all stages are completed within a 30-kilometre radius of the farm, ensuring product quality, traceability, and minimal food miles.
The business prioritises simple, transparent production methods and locally based value-adding.
Background & Story
Hemp has been grown at Woodlands Farm for nearly a decade. After initially producing hemp for larger corporations, the team behind Tassie Hemp Company began exploring direct-to-market opportunities, supported by strong community interest and their existing knowledge of hemp cultivation.
Since 2019, The Tassie Hemp Shop has focused on packaging, selling, and distributing its own products, working closely with local producers and building a strong presence at Tasmanian farmers markets.
People Behind the Business
Tim Schmidt is an active contributor to the Australian and Tasmanian hemp industry, with long-standing involvement in hemp cultivation and advocacy. Alongside industry engagement, Tim manages the day-to-day productivity of Woodlands Farm, including hemp production and pasture management.
Pip Schmidt supports farm and business operations behind the scenes, managing the many elements required to run a working farm and small manufacturing business.
Ben Lawless brings over 15 years’ experience in printing, design, marketing, and distribution. His role has been instrumental in developing packaging, branding, customer education, and market presence. Ben is also a familiar face at local farmers markets, sharing information and answering questions from customers.
Isobel and Kate support the business through social media, photography, drone work, and website development, building practical skills while contributing to the growth of the business.

Woodlands Farm
The directors of Tassie Hemp Company are based at Woodlands Farm, located five minutes from Deloraine in Northern Tasmania. The property includes 650 acres of arable land, 220 acres of native bushland, and river frontage.
Purchased in the 1940s by Alwen and Kathleen Graves, Woodlands has remained in the same family for three generations. Kathleen Graves documented early farming life in the Meander Valley in her book Tasmanian Pastoral, which provides historical insight into the region’s agricultural landscape.
Today, Woodlands Farm produces hemp, potatoes, and pastures. Hemp cultivation began in 2013, initially for soil regeneration benefits, and later expanded into food production following hemp’s legalisation as a food in Australia in 2017.
Environmental & Regenerative Practices
Regenerative land management is a key focus at Woodlands Farm. After observing the impacts of climate change on tree populations in 2016, the farm increased its efforts to improve biodiversity and landscape resilience.
With support from Landcare Tasmania, between 400 and 1,200 trees are planted annually. These practices support soil health, biodiversity, and long-term farm productivity.
Local Processing & Distribution
Hemp hearts are dehulled at Forager Foods, and hemp seed oil is cold-pressed at 41 Degrees South Salmon Farm, keeping processing and value-adding within Tasmania.
Tassie Hemp Company began selling products through Harvest Market Launceston and Farmgate Market Hobart, using direct market engagement to build relationships and share knowledge about hemp foods. Products are now stocked by a range of Tasmanian retailers, with selected distribution to interstate wholefood stores and cafés.
