Hempwood Samples

I have been working with Mr Xu Rong Long and his company, Zhangpu Zhonglong Kenaf Seeds Co., Ltd, and visiting China since 2016. Since around 2019, our discussions shifted from simply growing and selling hemp seed to looking at what was really needed to build a viable hemp market. In 2020 that expanded into hemp wood and a range of other products that could support broader hemp production.

There have been many discussions, trials and setbacks along the way. Several products are now close to completing testing and, over the next year, should be ready to move into production. As with anything in agriculture and manufacturing, the reality is that products must be cost-competitive in the current market to justify the time and expense of trials. With that in mind, we have narrowed our focus to a small number of products that make commercial sense.

A key principle of this partnership is that this is not about made in China, but made with China. Mr Xu has done a great deal of work developing an environmentally friendly glue suitable for particle board. After further searching in China for both a factory capable of producing hemp wood and a model that could be replicated in Australia, we believe we have found the right fit.

I have recently received the latest samples from the factory and am very impressed with the results. Back in 2010, I had a piece of hemp particle board produced in Perth by a glue expert, which tested to Category 2 flooring at 18mm thick. Based on what I am seeing now, I have no doubt these new samples will test extremely well.

The next step is to import several containers for further testing, including building code certification, as well as exploring applications in the automotive market. We aim to have products available soon from Hemp Inside.
